Wonderful town- well-kept secret

This town is very popular with the French and for good reason. Its a little hard to get to - up in the mountains of the Dordogne region but if you can find a way, it%26#39;s well worth it for a 3 to 5 day stay. We traveled here by car in mid- November %26#39;05. This is a good spot to use as a base-point to see the numerous wondrous sights in the region (paleolithic and other grandeous caves, cathar castles and beautiful fairytale settings). The town of Sarlat is a great experience in itself with it%26#39;s unique stone houses and ancient buildings made of the local %26quot;orange-ish%26quot; stone colors. Even the roofs of the buildings are a sight with their shapes and stone textures. The town is very clean and well-cared for (even the buildings are powerwashed). There are a lot of shops to see, fairly good restaurants to eat at, open-air markets and a lot of history to emmerse yourself in. This is a good choice for a truly unique old world experience. My family and I will always look back with fondness at this terrific experience.

Hotel des Recollettes -- I posted a review of this hotel on this forum site but it never came up --this hotel isn%26#39;t listed in the Tripadvisor %26quot;hotel%26quot; section -- I thought this may be of value to other travelers. This is the hotel where my party of 4 stayed in one room during our trip mentioned above. It is located %26quot;in%26quot; the old city of Sarlat and is assessible by foot down old cobblestone walkways (free hotel parking is off-site -- not curbside). Seems a little odd but turned-out to help add to the ambiance of the medeival atmosphere of this beautiful place. The hotel is clean and moderately priced, has modern baths in all rooms, has good breakfast (incl. in price), small rooms but not to cramped, very old building surrounded by even older buildings and all this is within easy and colorful walking distance of the village center. Only draw-back was no elevator to 3rd floor. Female staff were all courteous (male was a bit stand-offish but minded his own business). Good place to stay.

DMcD, We will be staying just outside Sarlat this coming summer for a couple of weeks and are very keen to try the local food. Can you recommend and restaurants or cafes from your vist that you were particularly pleased with.

cjlb -- aren%26#39;t you the lucky ones !?! I envy you --- as to your question, I%26#39;m probably not the best one to ask because we mostly ate out at Boulangeries and ate lightly -- we did eat at 2 of the local restaurants (sorry we didn%26#39;t catch the names) out of several in the downtown area and were very pleased (even though we%26#39;re not accustomed to French food). From what I observed, the food quality was generally in keeping with the appearance of the restaurant. Wish I could help you more but then I would have to have spent a lot more time in Sarlat (wait a minute -- that sounds like a good idea). Anyway -- have a great time - as I%26#39;m sure you will.
