I%26#39;m travelling to visit a friend in Strasbourg next month and thought I%26#39;d spend a couple of days in Paris, en route. Since I%26#39;m on my own, I%26#39;m thinking about a hostel to find company in the evenings, rather than locking myself up in a hotel room!
However, I would like some sleep so I%26#39;m trying to find a place that facilitates meeting people without being too much of a party-palace! Does such a place exist?

I%26#39;m not a big fan of hostels---especially for someone traveling alone---but perhaps some of this will help you with your search--

Dear Stevie,
Seems we are looking for the same things.
But I must say I am taking this risk even though I read negative reviews about hostels being loud and not so comfortable, but last time it was too quiet being solo in a hotel.
I am most likely to stay at Caulaincourt Square hostel for the second week of Feb, so far it has the most inviting pictures and the areas is not too bad, you might want to check it out:

Hope to bump into you there :)

I love staying in hostels when I am on my own. I have met made many friends this way over the years, from all corners of the earth.
This one has particularly good reputation in Paris:

when i went to paris, i stayed in %26quot;the lucky youth hostel%26quot;. It really isnt a hostel like all other ones. This lady, eloise, rents parisian apartments and makes them a hostel. Its nice cause you get an actual flat to share with other travellers. There was no supervision, and had a full kitchen to use, with washer and dryer as well as stove and eveything. It was a bit more than a hostel at about 30 euros a night. I have read some bad reviews about it here and other places, but i had a blast there, and would stay with her again.
The flat was in montmartre, about a 1 minute walk to sacre coeur.
Enjoy strasbourg, i absolutely loved that city. I stayed at CIARUS, if you need a place there, and it was nice.
I have used www.hostelworld.com and have found it to work well

MIJE doesn%26#39;t appear to have any communal rooms; so not easy to meet people, although it looks great for a group.
I did come across the Lucky Youth and it looks great, except I understand it has an age limit, which I%26#39;m sorry to say I exceed!
I suppose an alternative is to stay in a hotel and see which tripadvisor members want to meet up for dinner! Of course, in the UK I%26#39;m a youth worker and I would usually advise against meeting strangers off the web, lol!
