London to Venice in September

OK I admit it I am not a good flyer despite being all over the world - and my husband is a pilot ! Yes I know the air fares are cheap but I need a way of getting down to Venice/Lake Garda for my 25th Wedding Anniversary - Orient express one way maybe but has anyone any other ideas apart from me taking sedatives !!

Search the forum for views on the overnight trains. Not the Orient Express but your ordinary common or garden train. Not cheap exactly if you compare it to the no frills airlines but you save a night in hotel and a lot of anxiety.

I love travelling this way. Don%26#39;t know where you are in Wales but if you can get to London easily enough zip to Paris on the Eurostar then train from Paris Bercy to Italy.

Conceivably if you start somewhere on near the Swansea London line and just traverse London and Paris rather than sightseeing, you%26#39;ll be waking up in Italy the next morning.

:-)

Oh and, Congratulations on your Silver Wedding !

I took an over night train to Italy from Paris. It was so much fun. My friends and I had fun in our little compartiment and when we got tired we just flipped down our beds. And sense it is over night you don%26#39;t feel like you%26#39;ve wasted any time by taking a longer route.

Air, rail or road...those are your choices. When comparing the costs of the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, it may not be such a bad idea (schedule permitting)...relative to the costs of conventional international rail fares. But if time and cost are any part of the equation (return trip??), then air is the only way to go
