Advice reqd re travel to perpignan next year

Hi wonder if anybody can give me any advice on driving to perpignan next year, We have looked at the plane travel and got it down to £209 but you have to changed at Paris and such a long wait, and then thought might be fun to drive would like to go be ferry but not sure what port would be the best one to arrive at so that we dont have a mammoth drive at the other end as not used to driving abroad, live in Wiltshire so any advice on ports to go from this side would be great.

Thanks in advance

Ryanair goes from Stansted to Perpignan direct and if you%26#39;re flexible about your departure dates (ie avoid Fridays and weekends) you can get some really good deals. Stansted%26#39;s a bit of a drive from Wiltshire, admittedly, but not too far.

Whichever ferry port you arrive at in France, you are going to have a long, long drive (and will probably want to break the journey with an overnight stop).

If you do the ferry route option, probably best (given you are in Wiltshire) to take one from Portsmouth to Le Havre. According to Michelin, it%26#39;s a 999km drive from there to Perpignan.

Other airports within striking distance of Perpignan and with flights from the UK include Montpellier, Carcassonne and even Girona in Spain.

|||

Ryanair%26#39;s strange pricing structure makes Girona the best airport to fly to for that corner of France. Tolls in Spain will add a couple of pounds, but fuel is slightly cheaper.

Carcasonne is always next expensive, followed by Perpignan then Montpellier

Girona is a main Ryanair destination, they even fly there from Bournemouth. In fact they have some flights in January for £3.99

Best site to monitor fares is www.skyscanner.net

|||

Should have added Girona Airport to Perpignan is one motorway and 73 miles. It takes me less than an hour, but I ignore speed limits when abroad (when in Rome and all that)

If you hire a car, go with Europcar, I have always found them faultless.

Hi as I live near Perpignan and all have talked about flightd let me tell you the way i drive to UK

Tunnel to Calais

Calais to Lille

Lille to Paris

Round Paris following signs for Bordeaux

When at south of Paris follow signs for Orleans

STOP OVERNIGHT AT ORLEANS

from Orleans to Clermont Ferrand

Clermont Ferrand to Narbonne

Narbonne to Perpignan

its 1300 km and will take about 12 hours but you will go over the new bridge at Millau.

Advice re planes are good and Gerone airport is 50 mins to Peroignan if you use Ryanair Hertz hire cars are cheaper.

Any further info jusr post.

The cheapest car hire by a long way is holidayautos. They use Europcar to supply them but typically, for a three day rental, you get the car from holidayautos for EUR 30, the exact same car from Europcar is EUR 50 or so. Moreover, there%26#39;s a whole lot less included in the Europcar price.

Other direct flights are Birmingham and Southampton to Perpignan via FlyBE and from next year Manchester to Perpignan from BMIBaby.

Live in Dorset. Took ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo and drove to Ceret in one day. Took 10 hours plus stops of 30 minutesx4, sharing driving with husband. St Malo to Nantes to Bordeaux to Toulouse to Narbonne to Perpignan. Met up with friends who flew from Southampton with flybe direct for £90 each. Driving quite straightforward but buzy on ringroads around cities mentioned above.

I really wouldn%26#39;t recommend driving it in one day. We have guests who drive and guests who fly. The English ones that drive from northern France in one day are all quite loopy by the time they get here (near Perpignan). Interestingly, the Belgians %26amp; Dutch who have further to drive are OK but I think they%26#39;re more used to the long distance driving.

There are a considerable number of accidents caused locally by long distance drivers who just fall asleep or lose concentration.

If you%26#39;re driving, take it in two days. You%26#39;ll see the scenery properly and get here in one piece.

Depending on where you are in Wiltshire, you may find flying to Barcelona from Bristol Airport a better option. We flew there in July and it was still fairly cheap. We hired a car at Barcelona airport (the Bristol flight arrives around 1pm-ish) and drove straight to Perpignan. It%26#39;s only about 3 hours drive at most and is a beautiful straightforward journey.

|||

2 1/2 to 3 hours is the normal time from Barcelona airport to Perpignan but be very wary of the rush hour. If it looks like you%26#39;ll hit that, I%26#39;d be inclined to sit in the airport for a while to avoid it as it can easily add an hour or more to your trip.

On the way back to the airport, the signposting is very bad. You need to change direction 12 times (we counted it once) and almost all the time the sign is immediately before the turnoff which, on the five lane highway, is far from easy to get to.

Snag is that if you miss a turnoff it can take over an hour working out how to get back on the route.
