question about les soldes

I%26#39;ve never really understood why there are only two official sale periods per year. I know they are government regulated, but why did they find the need to make official sales periods? Why can%26#39;t a store have a huge blow out sale whenever it wants?

(I understand the %26quot;promotion%26quot; idea,etc..)

Its done to have real discounts rather than the UK example of shops such as Dixons/Virgin/Top shop having year round %26quot;sales%26quot;. Its also meant to protect small shops who don%26#39;t have the buying power of large chains.

Stores do have %26quot;blow out sales%26quot; if they are closing. If you go into Fnac/GAP/Virgin/Zara etc they always have something discounted, they just can%26#39;t call it soldes.

Yeah, I knew that stores have promotions, but I didn%26#39;t exactly get why they couldn%26#39;t do like stores in the US or UK do, having a sale for every occasion under the sun. I knew it had soemthing to do w/ competition.

Thanks for clarifying it!

The French government currently wants to reform the %26quot;official sale period%26quot; system, but distributors associators are fiercely against!

I think it is only twice a year because you only have two collections in shops for clothes, the winter collection (sales in January) and the summer collection (sales in july).
